I used to be an over-careful draughtsman. Using pencil I tried to produce linear drawings that relied on the weight and quality of the line to show the form. With charcoal and chalk I was freer but it took me years before I started to produce drawings where I was deliberately trying to avoid accurate outlines, producing a quick, gestural drawing, where the individual marks may all be wrong, but where the overall drawing is right.
